Policies

I've worked hard over the past four years to drive a progressive, active and transparent council.

I continue to work towards low rates, providing better services, making Glenorchy a safer place and ensure sound financial management. I listen to what you see as important for our future and feed that into council decisions.

Glenorchy will have a strong and prosperous future; it will be a leading example of smart thinking, smart business and opportunity for all.

I understand many of us are experiencing tough times; I continue to hold council accountable for its decisions through strong and accurate debate, leading a transparent and honest, open decision making process.

Change is Needed

What we fail to see is reducing Council by two members would only save rate payers about two dollars per year each.

We need to reform the Local Government Act which does not require much input from Alderman to represent the people who elect them. If we take the Act as written in Glenorchy, Alderman including the Mayor may only turn up to one meeting per month to fill the requirements of the Act.

What I want to see is Local Government reform by reforming the Act so it requires all Aldermen to actively perform duties that builds a city that is financial, strong and delivering on services to the community, some Council do this better than others.

Such things as portfolios for Alderman to have responsibility for, as well as attending workshops as well as council meetings in Glenorchy's case should be compulsory; we also need Alderman to spend some time working in Council offices.

With this should come better outcomes for Council and attract people who want to be active hard working Alderman and are willing to commit the time to do so.

Better synergies with Brighton & Derwent Valley for Glenorchy City Council.

I believe that Glenorchy City Council would be better off to explore synergies between Brighton & Derwent Valley Council rather than looking to the City of Hobart. My position is "Working productively with Brighton and the Derwent Valley Council offers great opportunities for shared services and exploring the future of the councils and how they could best serve their rate payers". I think the Hobart City Council is a stand-alone council in many ways and Glenorchy would be better off looking at how it could work with its two nearest councils, ones outside the City mentality.

I think that there are real opportunities to do a better, more efficient, cheaper and more effective job for our rate-payers.

Struggling to keep their heads afloat.

People in public housing are crying out for support not another slap in the face.

With most enduring several rent increases lately and more to come, they are now faced with the possibility of a water bill. Choices are being made between eating, pay bills-trying to hang on to a roof over their head or be homeless.

Others renting or buying are facing increased rents, higher rate bills and water & sewage bills. As well as a fist full of other demands while they struggle to make ends meet.

We must change our direction, the future should be bright and there are people like myself wanting to make those changes.

Glenorchy as a City has a responsibility to drive sound financial management, deliver better services and still maintain low rates for its citizens.
We want a safe and friendly environment to live, work and be happy.
